We went to Bretville Junction at the east end of Edmonton to see what we could find for a couple of hours. It did not disappoint.

We stopped for three trains between Jasper and Hinton on our first (non-rail-oriented) tourist visit of the Rockies since moving out West.


August 9th, 2020

On our way into Jasper National Park to do some family touristing, we stopped at Jasper Lake to watch an eastbound intermodal across the water -- this time in decent light.


October 3rd, 2020

We traveled from Edmonton via the south side of Walker Yard, exploring toward Tofield and then Camrose, catching CN 142, 111, 347, 199, and 142 a second time on the Wainwright sub, and 114 coming up the Camrose sub.


October 23rd, 2020

Word got out about CN heritage GP40-3 on CN 356. I checked for it at Bretville Jct and worked west, finding it stopped at the 147th St crossing in Edmonton.


December 29th, 2020

We went to Vegreville to see the big egg, and chased 411 from Innisfree back to Vegreville catching it across sunset.


December 30th, 2020

We heard about CN's BC rail heritage unit leading CN 108 out of Jasper and ventured westward to see if we could catch it, getting CN 101 with two C40-8Ms, 310, and 773 at Carvel, CN 834, 108 with the heritage unit, and 180 in Marlboro, and 412 at Entwistle and again on the bridge over the 16 at Magnolia Bridge near Gainford.


February 15th, 2021

We ventured down to Red Deer and back to see what we could find.


April 1st, 2021

We stopped to catch a CP northbound with foreign and heritage power on our way to Calgary.


April 2nd, 2021

We headed down to Calgary and across to Banff to explore, catching one at Morant's Curve.


April 13th, 2021

We ran across a rail train working on the bridge at Bretville Jct while working on some errands.


April 24th, 2021

We went off to find a caboose I had spotted south of Bretville Jct a few days earlier while on errands, catching CN 189 and some four-axle power betwen Bretville and Clover Bar before lunch. After lunch, we returned to Bretville, finding CN 818 heading down the Camrose sub, CN 242 grain train heading east out of the city, CN 119 crossing the bridge, and CN 443 crossing off of the Camrose.


July 17th, 2021

Out for a long bike ride, I happened upon an eastbound heading up the Vegreville sub followed by a couple of LRTs on the 129th Ave crossing.


July 26th, 2021

Heading into the mountains, we caught 101 behind the grocery store in Hinton, and then again at Lake Jasper followed shortly by 900 and 417, before catching 186 meeting the same 417 at Moose Lake, mile 36 of the Albreda sub. We finished the day in the dense smoke of Kamloops, finding the Rocky Mountaineer arriving back in town.


August 21st, 2021

We took the Edmonton Radial Railway street car across the high level bridge ahead of a rare wedding charter following us for our trip back north.


September 7th, 2021

We explored the Westlock sub, catching 419 crossing under the Henday leaving Edmonton, CP crossing the diamond between Bruderheim and Fort Saskatchewan, and CP 186 at Clover Bar, as well as seeing the caboose on the bridge and Cando's power near the Camrose sub.


September 12th, 2021

CN 304 was reported to have the GTW heritage unit leading, and so we waded out in strong rain to catch them leaving Clover Bar after a lift.


September 13th, 2021

CN 416 had the WC heritage leader coming into Edmonton. We went to 149th St to catch it coming into town, where it met 303. We then went over to Bissel yard to see if we could find the IC heritage GP40-Slug set, CN 7601/601, and then caught 735 and 114 at Bretville Junction. After, we chased 522 to Fort Saskatchewan, catching an industrial Genset at a facility near the Vegreville sub, CN 538 waiting on the Beamer Industrial Spur waiting for CN 808, chasing 538 back toward Edmonton after the meet before calling it a day.


September 14th, 2021

I caught CN 591, 418, and 848 coming down the Westlock sub over the course of the day.


January 12th, 2022

I caught CN 418 heading into Edmonton on the Westlock sub under the Henday while in the area for errands.


February 10th, 2022

With my family in town we toured around visiting the Mundare sausage, Vegreville egg, St Paul UFO landing pad, and other such tourist attractions, catching CN 410 passing the egg as we passed with good timing.


July 16th, 2022

Traveling toward Vancouver, we stopped for CN 199 and Via 2 around Jasper.


April 8th, 2023

An old friend rode the Canadian from Toronto to Vancouver and so I went to visit him at the station in Edmonton as he went through, catching two locals and 347 before VIA 1 came in.
