Abilene, KansasAbilene is the home of the President Eisenhower library and a diverse set of rail operations leaving little room for railfan boredom. A must-see if you are in Kansas.
Altoona, Pennsylvania(map) Railfan City. Altoona's sports stadium is in the shape of a roundhouse, railfans are welcome, and trains are everywhere. Just a few miles away is Horseshoe Curve, Cresson, the Gallitzin tunnel, the SD80MACs at South Fork, and other sites making the region a virtual Mecca for railfans in this corner of the US.
Amsterdam, New YorkAmsterdam is on the outskirts of the Albany area to the west where the CSX and Amtrak lines fork to enter the state capital region.
Anaheim, CaliforniaAnaheim, in the greater Los Angeles area, is the home of California's Disneyland.
Angola, New York(map) In the township of Evans, New York are the towns of Angola and Derby where the CSX Chicago line parallels a somewhat quieter NS track between nearby Buffalo, NY and Chicago, IL. A great spot for shooting both of these is at Sturgeon Point Road, with plenty of warning from talking defect detectors, CTC signals and headlights.
Ardmore, OklahomaArdmore is a town near the Oklahoma-Texas border with a significant public, free Christmas-season light show.
Ashland, NebraskaAshland is just west of Omaha along the BNSF with heavy coal traffic.
Avon, New YorkAvon is between Lakeville and Henrietta on the LAL.
Bainbridge, New York(map) Bainbridge is a small town a few miles west of Sidney, New York, on I-88 around 20 miles east of Binghamton.
Bartlett, New HampshireBartlett is just east of the White Mountain National Forest near Mount Washington.
Bellefonte, Pennsylvania(map) Bellefonte is a small town serviced by the Nittany and Bald Eagle a few miles off interstate 80 near where interstate 99 will eventually intersect with it. There is an RDC-based tourist operation there at the old station.
Bellows Falls, Vermont(map) Vermont Rail System member Green Mountain Railway meets the NECR at Bellows Falls. There is purported to be a GMRS Alco RS-1 here, as well. It is directly across the river from North Walpole, New Hampshire.
Bernardston, Massachusetts(map) The Guilford Maine Central (MEC) line heads through Bernardston on what would normally be a short treck from Deerfield to Brattleboro. Except the line is 5 to 10 mph so chasing a train is kind of like chasing a turkey, or would be if there were more grade crossings.
Binghamton, New York(map) Binghamton is the site of the interchange of the NYSW, D&H, and NS near the New York-Pennsylvania border. While there are several yards in the city and a number of tracks, most are largely inaccessible.
Branford, ConnecticutBranford is a small town just east of New Haven, Connecticut along the lakeshore commuter (Providence and Worcester) line.
Brattleboro, Vermont(map) This town is on the New England Central Railway track near the New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Vermont borders.
Brownville, Maine(map) Brownville has a frequently used wye for the Montreal, Maine and Atlantic between their Derby shops and Brownville Junction.
Brownville Junction, Maine(map) Brownville Junction is its own town near Brownville, hosting an MMA yard and tracks heading out every which way. New Brunswick Southern, officially called Eeastern Maine Railway in that area, interchanges with MMA at this yard.
Brunswick, MarylandBrunswick is a large CSX yard at the end of the MARC Brunswick line out of Washington, DC to the north-west.

Caledonia, New YorkCaledonia is the junction of the Genesee and Wyoming and the Genesee and Wyoming-owned Rochester Southern a few miles south-west of Rochester, New York.
Cambridge, MarylandCambridge is on the west coast of the Maryland-Delaware penninsula and is the end of the Maryland and Delaware shortline's operations.

Carrollton, TexasCarrollton is one of the northern parts of the 11-county country-sized metroplex known as Dallas-Fort Worth, and is home to a chaotic junction of several lines.
Cassandra, Pennsylvania(map) Between Cresson and South Fork, Cassandra is a small town with a disused road bridge over the tracks that is now explicitly a railfan platform, complete with a "Welcome, Railfans!" sign at the end.
Chester, VermontChester is on the Green Mountain Railway line between Rutland and Bellows Falls.
Chicago, IllinoisChicago is without a doubt the rail capital of North America, but it does require some preparation to explore and a lot of patience to deal with what passes for traffic flow in the city.
Claremont, New Hampshire(map) Claremont is the junction and interchange of the NECR and the Concord and Claremont Railroad (CCRR), between North Walpole, New Hampshire, and White River Junction, Vermont.
Clear Brook, VirginiaClear Brook is on the I-81 and Winchester and Western at the West Virginia border.
Clearfield, Pennsylvania(map) Clearfield is the home of the RJ Corman Pennsylvania operation. They have a small yard and a large enginehouse hiding the power.
Clyde, New YorkClyde is just to the east of Lyons on the CSX about half way between Rochester and Syracuse, New York.
Compton, Virginia(map) Compton, Virginia is just south-west of Front Royal.
Concordia, KansasConcordia is along the KYLE in north-central Kansas.
Conneaut, OhioSteve told me I needed to check Conneaut -- and you do too. It is an interesting town on the south shore of Lake Erie which is not easy to explore but has plenty to see if you are willing to go down small single lane roads to their ends.
Corfu, New YorkCorfu is a small town just to the east of Batavia on the CSX main.
Council Bluffs, IowaCouncil Bluffs is the Iowa side of the city of Omaha, Nebraska and is the western terminus of the IAIS.
Creslo Station, Pennsylvania(map) Just south of South Fork, Creslo Station is a point on an NS coal spur serviced by NS' few SD80MACs.
Cresson, Pennsylvania(map) Cresson is the summit of the hill for which Horseshoe Curve exists. There is an engine facility where several sets of helper units park, the SD80MACs that work in nearby South Fork spend their weekends there, and NS interchanges with R. J. Corman on the wye. There is even a city-owned railfan observation platform at the tracks across from the wye.
Cumberland, MarylandCumberland is the site of a large CSX yard and former Conrail locomotive shops. It is non-stop action with plenty of things to see from all sides.
Danville, Maine(map) Danville Junction and Lewiston Junction are near the Maine city of Lewiston. Danville Junction is the Junction of the Maine Central (Guilford) and the St. Lawrence and Atlantic (SLR). Lewiston Junction is the site of SLR's main locomotive shops.
Deerfield, Massachusetts(map) Home of the Guilford lines, Deerfield has a large yard and junction. Guilford has a reputation for arresting (not fining) trespassers on its property, according to locals, and the yard is not very accessible without trespassing. It is limited to a bridge on a dead-end road that leads to the yard.
Delanson, New YorkDelanson is on the Delaware and Hudson a few miles to the south-west of Albany. It's also the junction point for an obscure new shortline.
Depew, New York(map) This is at or near the Buffalo-Depew Amtrak train station in upstate New York, near the Canadian border.
Derby, Maine(map) Derby and Milo are sister towns on either side of a river on the MMA line, hosting the Montreal, Maine, and Atlantic Derby shops near Brownville Junction and about 40 minutes North of Bangor.
Dubois, Pennsylvania(map) Dubois is a large yard on the GNWR-owned Buffalo and Pittsburg.
Dunkirk, New York(map) The former Conrail Buffalo-Chicago now operated by CSX runs along the coast of Lake Erie through the town of Dunkirk, outside which is an excellent photographic overpass for the CSX line. The nearby Nickel Plate, now NS, line is a bit further South.
Durand, MichiganDurand is about a half hour west of Flint, Michican, and is the interchange point between the CN, the Central Maine, and the Great Lakes Central. The Amtrak station, a large historic station in the middle of a junction punctuated with a diamond, is a popular and excellent railfan location, further enhanced by the presence of a railway museum in the building.
Eastanollee, North Carolina(map) Eastonollee is between Toccoa and Lavonia and North-Eastern Georgia.
Elm City, North Carolina(map) Elm City is a small community on the CSX north of Wilson, NC.
Fairmont, NebraskaFairmont is just south of the I-80 on state highway 81 and host to a petrochemical company with extensive rail service and a local switcher.
Falconer, New YorkFalconer is the home of the Western New York and Pennsylvania's shops near Jamestown.
Ferrisburg, Vermont(map) The VRS's line between Rutland and Burlington, Vermont passes through a number of small communities including the town of Ferrisburg, a little bit North of Vergennes.

Florence, South CarolinaFlorence is a CSX junction a few miles south of the North Carolina border on the I-95.
Folkston, Georgia(map) Folkston is a town just north of the Florida border that has embraced trainspotting to the extent that they have built a train viewing platform complete with a permanent scanner.
Gallitzin, Pennsylvania(map) Just west of Horseshoe Curve on the NS is a 3000 foot tunnel which comes out in the town of Gallitzin.
Galveston, TexasGalveston is a significant industrial port, cruise port, and tourist town on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The island is home to several railways, an enormous single track bridge with its own authority shared by UP and BNSF, and a century-old tram.
Gang Mills, New York(map) Gang Mills is right beside Painted Post and Corning on the NS, around half way between Binghamton and Rochester. NS forks here and the Wellsborough and Corning shortline passes just South of NS' Gang Mills yard.
Garrett Park, MarylandJust outside the beltway, Garrett Park holds the CSX (and MARC) Brunswick line into Washington, DC
Gary, IndianaGary is the Indiana side of Chicago and is a fairly significant rail hub in its own right.

Geneva, NebraskaGeneva is along the state highway 81 corridor south of York, Nebraska and home to some obscure abandoned equipment along the side of the highway.

Greenfield, Massachusetts(map) Greenfield hosts a junction of two Guilford lines at a city park just West of East Deerfield yard.
Gretna, LouisianaGretna is across the river from New Orleans and is the site of the New Orleans and Gulf Coast, which makes extensive use of street running.
Groton, ConnecticutNew London is on the west side of a channel and Groton is on the east along the south coast of Connecticut. It is the site of an easily accessible railway draw bridge along the Providence and Worcester as well of a small wye. New London also hosts the New England Central's southern limits and their interchange with the Providence and Worcester.
Hamburg, New YorkHamburg is just outside of Buffalo to the south-west and is the home to Buffalo Southern's not particularly accessible power line-up.
Harrington, DelawareHarrington is the site of a small Norfolk Southern yard just to the west of Milford, Delaware.
Hatfield, Massachusetts(map) A Guilford line runs through Hatfield south of East Deerfield yard toward Springfield.
Henrietta, New YorkHenrietta is a large suburb of Rochester to its immediate south.
Hermon, Maine(map) Hermon is just South-West of Bangor and hosts the MMA Northern Maine Junction with the Guilford as well as MMA's RTC and offices.
Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania(map) Just outside of Altoona to the south, Hollidaysburg is the site of an enormous, totally abandoned freight yard and freight car shop. There is a second, smaller car shop that is still in service. The town is the interchange point between the Everett Railroad and Norfolk Southern.
Hoosick Junction, New YorkHoosick Junction is along the Guilford northeast of Albany. The line connecting to Bennington and the Vermont Rail System there originates here.
Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania(map) Horseshoe Curve, just oustide of Altoona, is the site of a Pennsylvanian State Park and purpose-built railfan observation platform, complete with its own cable-drawn tram to get up to it. The tracks change in elevation by 122 feet as they go around the observation deck.
Industry, New YorkIndustry is the home of the Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad Museum along the LAL.
Jackson, New YorkJackson encompasses Shushan and The Plains and is along the Batten Kill railroad between Cambridge and Greenwich Junction (Salem).
Jamestown, Pennsylvania(map) Another small town, Jamestown is between Cresson and South Fork and hosts an in-service road overpass over the NS line.
Key West, FloridaAt the southern tip of Florida, 90 miles off the coast of Cuba, was once the end of the Florida East Coast. The railway has been gone almost a century, but it remains a tourist town with plenty of road trains to entertain.
Kimball, Virginia(map) Kimball is just west of the Thornton Gap entrance to Skyline Drive.
Knowlesville, New YorkKnowlesville is along the Falls Road between Medina and Albion a few miles to the west of Rochester.
Lackawanna, New York(map) Lackawanna is immediately south of Buffalo and hosts Buffalo and Pittsburgh, Buffalo Southern, NS, and CSX tracks.

Lock Haven, Pennsylvania(map) An hour and change north-east of Altoona, Lock Haven is the interchange point between NS and the Nittany and Bald Eagle and the northern end of the Nittany and Bald Eagle's operation.
Lockport, New YorkLockport is the junction of the CSX and the Falls Road just to the east of Buffalo.
Lowell, MassachusettsLowell is a town just north of Boston hosting the MBTA, CSX, and Pan Am.

Lyons, New York(map) Lyons is a few miles South of Geneva, New York, linked by an NS track from the town's ex-Conrail CSX main line to the Finger Lakes Railway.
Martin, Georgia(map) Martin is a small community just outside Lavonia in north-east Georgia.
Medina, New YorkMedina is along the Falls Road about half way between Buffalo and Rochester.
Meredith, New Hampshire(map) Meredith hosts the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad and is situated fairly far from any other rail lines in central New Hampshire.
Miami, FloridaMiami has a surprising amount of rail, with FEC, CSX, and a variety of passenger services in a complex network through town.
Middleport, New YorkMiddleport is between Lockport and Medina on the Falls Road.

Millinocket, Maine(map) Millinocket is about 30 miles North of Brownville Junction, just West of Interstate 95 and an hour North of Bangor.

Milton, Vermont(map) Milton is a small town between St. Albans and Burlington, Vermont and hosts an NECR passing siding.
Mobile, AlabamaMobile is the home of the Alabama Export and a busy set of yards at its large port.
Morgantown, West VirginiaMorgantown is along a river at the junction of Interstates 68 and 79. It has only one track through town, an NS line that seems to host CSX traffic.
Moss Point, MississippiHome of the Mississippi Export Rail shops just north of Pascagoula, there is some almost street-running and an easily viewed curved causeway.
Mount Morris, New York(map) Mount Morris is the junction of the Gennessee and Wyoming, and Dansville and Mount Morris shortlines, about 45 minutes south of Rochester on I-390.
Mount Washington, New HampshireMount Washington is in the White Mountain National Forest and hosts the world's oldest cog railway and the Conway Scenic.
Mountain View, CaliforniaWhile I had a contract with a company in Mountain View for nearly a decade, I never actually visited it for more than eight years after the contract ended. It is just outside of San Jose on the southern end of the San Francisco bay.

Nashville, North Carolina(map) Nashville, North Carolina bills itself as the original Nashville and is a small town just to the west of Rocky Mount on the CLNA.
New Orleans, LouisianaNew Orleans is famous for many things and needs no introduction. It is also a busy railroad city.
Newark, New YorkNewark is the junction of the Ontario Midland and the CSX.
Newport, IowaNewport is east of Des Moines on the Iowa Interstate Railroad.
Newton, KansasNewton is the home of significant yard and easily viewed locomotive shop on the BNSF in central Kansas.
North Chili, New YorkNorth Chili is a suburb of Rochester to the southwest along the CSX.
North East, Pennsylvania(map) The town of North East is the home of an excellent museum of preserved railway equipment, including a weird GE-built "little Joe" Russian electric locomotive that was never delivered to the former Cold War adversary. The museum is on the web here. The museum is built around a well-preserved station on the busy CSX Buffalo-Chicago line and encourages railfans with a scanner blaring over the platform and a clear view of both the CSX and NS lines.
North Walpole, New Hampshire(map) The Vermont Rail Systems Green Mountain Railway terminates here. The NECR and the GMRC both cross the Connecticut River at North Walpole from Bellows Falls, Vermont.
Northfield, Massachusetts(map) Home of Northfield Mount Hermon School, where I attended high school and met my wife, Northfield has the junction of the NECR and MEC lines in a rural area near the Vermont border.
Oakland, CaliforniaOakland is directly across the bay from San Francisco and is home to a busy stretch of street-running known as Jack London Square.
Ocala, FloridaOcala is home to the Florida Northern Railroad.
Oklahoma City, OklahomaOklahoma City is the state capitol and home to several railways.
Old Saybrook, ConnecticutOld Saybrook is the site of a wye and small yard at an Amtrak station most of the way to New London from New Haven.
Omaha, NebraskaOmaha is a great spot to explore. Kenefik Park is home to a DD40 and Big Boy 4-8-8-4 twinned together in a static display on a hill top, a tribute to UP's rich heritage in the city. There is also plenty of BNSF activity and other systems nearby and over the river in Iowa.
Orange, TexasOrange is on the Texas-Louisiana border along the Union Pacific and I-10.
Orlando, FloridaThe home of Disney World and so many other attractions -- and an interesting selection of unusual trains...
Owosso, MichiganJust a few minutes north-west of Durand, Owosso is the home of the TSBY. It has largely inaccessible shops and boasts a small museum which operates occasional steam excursions.
Parkertown, OhioParkertown is a siding under Interstate 80 on an NS line where the Wheeling and Lake Erie has operating rights. It is between Sandusky and Bellevue.
Pascagoula , MississippiNear the Mississippi-Alabama border along the CSX at the junction of the Mississippi Export.
Penns Grove, New JerseyPenns Grove is just across the water from Wilmington, Delaware.
Plaquemine, LouisianaPlaquemine is along the Mississippi river between Baton Rouge and Gretna along the Union Pacific.
Plattsburgh, New York(map) Plattsburgh is just south of the Canadian border on I-87.
Port Canaveral, FloridaPort Canaveral is the cruise ship terminal near NASA's Kennedy Space Centre on the coast of Florida.
Port Salerno, FloridaPort Salerno is a smaller community in Martin County and is where it all began for me. As a kid, my grandparents had a condo at Emerald Lakes on SE Cove Road where they wintered. Every Christmas, we would drive down as a family to visit them, and whenever I could I would take the bike down to the crossing and wait, hoping for a train on the FEC tracks. In all my Christmas holidays of doing that, I never once saw a train there, though did once chat with a track foreman who got off to inspect why his truck had triggered the crossing gates. All night long I would hear trains pass and so the next day I would try again...
Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania(map) Better known for its annual ground hog day celebrations, Buffalo and Pittsburg's inaccessible Riker Yard is found just outside of this town.
Roaring Spring, Pennsylvania(map) A few miles south-west of Holidaysburg near Altoona, Roaring Spring is a small town with a large rail-using facility serviced by Everett Railroad.
Rocky Mount, North Carolina(map) Rocky Mount is the junction of the CSX and CLNA.
Rome, New YorkRome is between Oneida and Utica on the CSX. Its industrial tracks are serviced by the Mohawk, Adirondack, and Northern.
Rouses Point, New YorkRouses Point is on the D&H at the border of Quebec, Vermont, and New York.
Rutland, Vermont(map) Called Vermont's rail hub by the Vermont Rail System, this city on the New York border is not a fantastic railfanning spot, though not for a lack of good trains. The main drag through town offers few good locations and the yard, found at the East end of a stretch of track common to 4 VRS lines is not very accessible. Outside of the city there are many nice locations but with only a couple of trains per day, understanding the cryptic clearances is critical. Rutland is not really near anything in Vermont, but is along the Western boarder of the state about an hour North of Massachusetts.
Salamanca, New York(map) Salamanca hosts a small yard on the Buffalo and Pittsburg (GNWR), and is an apparently-disused interchange point with the Western New York and Pennsylvania.
Salem, New YorkSalem is at the northern tip of the Batten Kill railroad and hosts Greenwich Junction.
Salina, KansasSalina is a very busy railroad meeting spot in central Kansas.
San Francisco, CaliforniaSan Francisco truly needs no description.
Sanbornville, New Hampshire(map) Sanbornville is the first town South of the New Hampshire Northcoast's gravel pit, 38 miles North of Rollinsford, New Hampshire, where the NHN connects to Guilford.
Schenectady, New York(map) Schenectady is adjacent to New York State capital Albany and is crawling with train tracks owned by the D&H (CP), CSX, and Springfield Terminal (Guilford) -- and people.
Scranton, Pennsylvania(map) Home of Steamtown, a large state parks-run museum dedicated to the preservation of steam engines. It is about 45 minutes south of Binghamton.
Selkirk, New York(map) Selkirk is the home of one of CSX's largest, if not particularly accessible, yards, near Albany.
Seneca Falls, New York(map) Seneca Falls is between Geneva and Syracuse, New York on the Finger Lakes Railway.

Sharpsburg, North Carolina(map) Sharspburg is just to the south of Rocky mount on the CSX.
Sodus, New YorkSodus is the home of the Ontario Midland.
Solomon, KansasSolomon is between Salina and Abilene on the KYLE, UP, and BNSF.
South Fork, Pennsylvania(map) Home of the SD80MACs, this junction on the NS serves as the service line for coal mines in the area, which are serviced by NS' few SD80MACs. It is about thirteen miles west of Cresson.
Saint Augustine, Florida(map) Saint Augustine is an hour south of Jacksonville on the Florida East Coast.
St. Albans, Vermont(map) CN and NECR (New England Central Railway) meet at St. Albans. Amtrak's Vermonter originates here at 06:35 and returns at 20:45. There is a large yard in the town and the station is sufficiently well lit for readable night shots without a tripod or flash in the winter.
Stanwix, New YorkStanwix is the home of Reber Rd, a decent spot to sit and watch the CSX line between Utica and Rome. The Mohawk, Adirondack, and Northern runs over the CSX from Utica to Rome by this point.
Stillwell, IndianaStillwell is the junction of the CN and the Anacostia and Pacific.
Stuart, FloridaStuart is in Martin County on the FEC and home to a peculiar roundabout with the railway through the middle and the Stuart drawbridge on the railway, both of which I have not yet photographed but have seen.
Summerhill, Pennsylvania(map) Summerhill is a small town between South Fork and Cresson on the route 53 railfan point list.
Syracuse, New YorkSyracuse is between Rochester and Utica on the CSX Buffalo line, and is also the connection point for the CSX Montreal sub which goes to Coteau near Montreal.
Titusville, FloridaTitusville is a bit north of Cocoa near the Kennedy Space Centre along the FEC.
Toccoa, Georgia(map) Toccoa is the western limit of the historic Hartland Railway, which has existed as a shortline since its creation in the 19th century.
Toledo, OhioToledo is a relatively large city on the Ohio-Michigan border at the western tip of Lake Erie, boasting several large yards and industries as well as the Ann Arbor railway shops.
Tyrone, Pennsylvania(map) About 15 minutes north on interstate 99 from Altoona is the town of Tyrone, the northern limits of the Nittany and Bald Eagle's operation and the site of a second interchange with NS, right at the town's Amtrak station.
Union Bridge, MarylandUnion Bridge is the home of the Maryland Midland railway, some ways north of Fredericksburg. There is active street running in this town (mostly at night), however locals say this street running will be goon in the near future.
Unionville, Pennsylvania(map) Unionville is a small village along the Nittany and Bald Eagle between Bellefonte and Tyrone.
